Signs Your Website Is Quietly Costing You Clients

17 August 2026 · by Maria Glowacka

Your website might be losing you customers right now, and the frustrating part is that you would never know. Nobody emails to say "I nearly got in touch, but your site put me off." They just quietly go elsewhere, and you are left wondering why the enquiries are thin. The good news is that most of the warning signs are easy to spot yourself, once you know what to look for. Here are the ones I would check first, you can go through them in a few minutes on your own phone, no technical knowledge required.

It is slow to load

Open your website on your phone, on mobile data rather than wi fi, and count in your head. If it takes more than a few seconds to show something useful, that is a problem. People are impatient, and a slow site quietly tells them, unfairly, that your business is a bit behind the times. Try it again from a cold start, with the page fully closed first, because that is the experience a brand new visitor actually gets.

It does not work properly on a phone

Most people will meet you on a phone long before they ever see your site on a computer. Scroll through your own site on one and be honest. Is the text big enough to read without pinching and zooming? Do the buttons work comfortably with a thumb? Does anything run off the side of the screen or overlap? If simply using the site feels like hard work, visitors will not push through it for you, they will just leave and try the next result.

It is not instantly clear what you do

Look at the very top of your homepage as if you had never seen it before. Within a couple of seconds, can a total stranger tell what you offer, who it is for and where you are based? If they have to scroll and hunt to work it out, a lot of them simply will not bother. Clear always beats clever, and the top of your homepage is the one place you cannot afford to be vague.

There is no obvious next step

Every page should gently point to one clear action: call, book, enquire or buy. If someone likes what they see but cannot immediately work out how to take that next step, the interest you worked so hard to earn quietly fades away. A single, obvious button, repeated in the right places, does far more work than you would ever think. Make it effortless to say yes to you.

It looks dated or a little untrustworthy

Design is not just decoration; it is a trust signal. Small things, mismatched fonts, stretched or blurry photos, a stock image everyone has seen a hundred times, an old copyright year sitting in the footer, quietly add up to a feeling of "I am not sure about this one." People decide who to trust within seconds, usually without even realising they are doing it, and a tired looking site can undo a lot of good word of mouth. If your visuals need a refresh, that is exactly where strong graphic design in Aberdeen helps.

Your contact details are hard to find

This one sounds obvious, yet it catches so many businesses out. Can a visitor find how to reach you from any page, without digging? Your phone number, email and a simple contact form should never be more than a tap away. Every extra click between an interested customer and getting in touch is another chance for them to change their mind.

You are relying only on social media

If your whole online presence is a single social media page, you are building your business on rented ground. The platform owns the audience, sets the rules and decides who actually sees your posts, and all of that can change overnight, with no warning and no say from you. A website is the one place online that is genuinely yours, working for you day and night whether or not anyone happens to be scrolling. If a link in your bio is the only way people can find out about you, that is a sign worth taking seriously.

You cannot find it on Google

Search for your own business by name, and then for the service you offer plus your town, exactly as a customer would. If you are nowhere to be seen, you are effectively invisible to everyone who does not already know your name. Good web design in Aberdeen builds local search in from the very start, so the right people in your area can actually find you when they go looking.

What to do next

If a few of these rang true, please do not panic, every single one of them is fixable, and you do not have to work out the fix on your own. That is exactly why I offer a free mini brand audit: send me your website or social media link and I will give you an honest, jargon free review of how your brand looks to a potential customer, and what might be quietly holding you back. You can request it on my homepage, there is no cost and no pressure, just a fresh pair of designer's eyes on your business. It only takes a minute to send, and it might be the most useful thing you do for your website all week.

Want that honest second opinion? Request your free mini brand audit and I will tell you exactly what I would change first.
