Banner Design in Aberdeen: Roll Up and Large Format That Works
A banner is often the biggest thing a small business ever prints, and one of the most public. It hangs at an event, stands in a reception, greets people at an airport or sits behind you in every photo. That visibility is exactly why banner design deserves proper thought. A good banner reads in a second from across a room or a car park. A weak one becomes wallpaper that nobody remembers. In this post I want to share how I approach banner design in Aberdeen, and what makes a banner actually work.
What actually makes a banner work
Banners are read at distance and in passing, so the rules are different from a leaflet you hold in your hand. The message has to land before someone has finished walking past. When I design a banner I keep a few things front of mind.
- One clear message. A banner is not a brochure. It should say one main thing, with everything else supporting it, so the eye knows exactly where to go first.
- Readable from a distance. Type has to be large enough and have enough contrast to be read from several metres away, not just on a screen at arm's length.
- Strong hierarchy. A clear order of headline, supporting line and details means people take in the important part even if they never read the rest.
- On brand. The colours, fonts and style should match the rest of your business, so the banner strengthens your brand instead of looking like a one off.
- Room to breathe. Empty space is not wasted space. It is what makes the message stand out rather than fighting for attention.
Large format banners
Large format is banner design at its boldest, printed big and read from far away. Think building banners, exhibition backdrops and outdoor signage, often seen from a moving car or right across a busy space. The rules matter even more at this size, so I build large format pieces around one strong image and one short, confident line, with plenty of contrast. I set the artwork up carefully for the exact print size so it stays crisp however big it goes. Done well, a large format banner makes a small business look established the moment someone sees it.
Roll up banners
Roll up banners are the workhorse of small business marketing. They are portable, they pack away into their own base and they turn any corner into a branded space, which makes them perfect for events, receptions and studios. A good roll up does not try to say everything at once. I keep it to your logo, one clear message and a simple, on brand look, so it reads in a glance and still works as a backdrop in photos. That backdrop effect is worth planning for on purpose: every picture taken in front of a branded banner quietly carries your name a little further.
Getting a banner designed
Whether you need a roll up for an event or a large format piece for a building, the process is the same. I design the artwork around your brand and your one key message, set it up correctly for the size and the printer, and hand over print ready files. If you do not have a printer, I can point you towards good ones. Banners sit naturally alongside the rest of my graphic design in Aberdeen, so if you already have a logo and brand, your banner will match everything else you put out.
